Mike, President of Preston Actuarial Services, Inc., a full service actuarial and benefits consulting firm with offices in several California cities, has been practicing as a consulting pension actuary since 1979. Having worked in the actuarial department of a Big 8 (now Big 4) accounting firm and successfully managed a twenty employee pension administration company in Pasadena, CA, his experience includes service to large plans with employee populations in excess of 5,000 and to small plan sponsors such as professional corporations.
He is a frequent speaker and has spoken for, among others, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA), the Beverly Hills Bar Association, the Western Pension and Benefits Conference (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Orange County chapters) the National Institute of Pension Administrators, Spencer Publications and Corbel. He has appeared on a nationwide closed circuit telecast co-sponsored by all four of the major actuarial societies, discussing non-discrimination requirements under the September 12, 1991 final regulations.
During 1990 and 1991, Mike served as Editor-in-Chief of The Pension Actuary (now The ASPPA Journal), ASPPA’s monthly technical publication.
In addition to serving on ASPPA’s Board from 1991 through 1997, he served on various committees during that span.
In 2000, he chaired ASPPA’s subcommittee to Develop Implementation Guides on the Actuarial Standard of Practice Concerning Retirement Plan Benefits in Domestic Relations Actions. In 2002, he was appointed to the Pension Committee of the Actuarial Standards Board, which is primarily responsible for developing Actuarial Standards of Practice for the actuarial profession engaged in pension related matters and served for four years.
Also a member of the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries, he has been an Enrolled Actuary since 1983.
He received his B.S. degree in actuarial science from the University of Michigan.
